About Wallace House

History of Wallace House

Wallace House Community Centre was founded in 1946, when Samuel Wallace Smedley (of Smedley Peas) gifted 42 High Street and £10,000 for the benefit of Evesham’s community.

Built on the site of the former Oat Street police station, the Centre was developed in two phases between 1969 and 1980, creating spaces including the sports hall, upstairs lounge and dojo. The dojo was named in memory of Leslie Bawden, whose fundraising efforts with Henry King helped make the development possible.

In 1990, responsibility for the Trust passed to Evesham Town Council, maintaining Wallace House as a community asset.

Over the years, the Centre has hosted a wide range of community services, support groups and youth projects, adapting to the changing needs of local people.

Today, Wallace House continues its original vision of bringing people together, creating opportunities and enriching life for the people of Evesham.
